Design Solutions: Kitchen Banquettes

A banquette is a smart way to add function and beautiful design in your kitchen. It is a chameleon that can serve as a space for casual dining, kid’s crafts, homework or a morning spot to read your newspaper and enjoy a hot cup of coffee. Currently, I am designing a kitchen for my client that has two little girls who absolutely love art; they attend art school each week.  Since art is a huge passion for this family; I am having the girl’s artwork framed and matted in place of random art pieces. This is a great way to have original art that has meaning. Below is one of my inspiration images that I think Aerin’s designer did well for her family.

To ensure a perfect fit when incorporating a custom banquette in your home; the space needs to be measured on site and a template made accordingly. You want to choose a custom upholsterer who has experience in making restaurant banquettes. Having an experienced upholsterer will save you money and disappointment. A custom banquette depending on design and fabric can run between $2000 and upwards, which goes back to the importance of having a qualified upholsterer. Get inspired by some of these great banquettes.

Tip #1: Thickness of the bench seat needs to be 4″ – 6″ inches. Any less will be uncomfortable and look out of place.

Tip #2: Pillows – vary the sizes and choose a soft insert. 100% down will look unfinished so steer away from this type of insert.

Tip #3: Table size – measure the area, too small of table will get lost and too large will overwhelm the space. Scale is important.

Tip #4: Utilize the bottom of the banquette for storage. This is a great way to house crafts for the kids or table linens.

Tip #5: Have fun with fabrics! Fabrics are a focal point in having a great banquette so buy the best you can with the budget you have allotted. I promise you won’t regret it!!
